Big Island man charged for breaking into tourist’s car

A Honokaa man is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday for allegedly breaking into a tourist’s rental car.

According to Hawaii Island police, just after 1 p.m. Monday, a 58-year-old visitor from Henryville, Ind., reported that as he was returning to his unlocked rental car parked near a shopping center in Honokaa, he saw a man lean in through the passenger door, remove cash and flee.

About 15 minutes later, police located and arrested the suspect, Jovin Baba Batalona. Police charged Batalona with unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle and third-degree theft.

His bail is set at $11,000.
