Higher H-1 freeway median barriers prevent glare

Drivers on the H-1 freeway may have noticed something different on the median.

Portions of the concrete median barrier are getting taller around the Middle Street area.

The Department of Transportation says there’s a good reason for that.

“If you notice before this project, the concrete median barriers were relatively low. So opposing traffic’s head lights would cause you a lot of glare. That’s what we call a glare screen. To avoid that, and to make sure that opposing traffic doesn’t blind motorists going the opposite direction.” said Alvin Takashita from the Department of Transportation.

This is part of the work to rehab the H-1 freeway from Middle Street to Ward Avenue.
