State Senate President Donna Mercado Kim officially filed paperwork to run for Congress Wednesday.
The lawmaker is hoping to fill the 1st Congressional District seat left open by Rep. Colleen Hanabusa, who is running for U.S. Senate.
There is a long list of candidates vying for the office, but Kim says her experience sets her apart.
“My filing is not about me, it’s about the choice that I offer the voters of the Congressional District 1,” Sen. Kim said. “A choice for proven leadership, experienced leadership and leadership that is not afraid to challenge the status quo… Leadership that can bring people together in our Congress, bipartisan support for initiatives that will benefit Hawaii.”
Candidates have until June 3 to get their paperwork done before the primary on August 9.
