Two men have been charged for allegedly trying to steal copper wiring near Nimitz Hwy. The area has been hit several times by thieves in the past.

Police say a tip led officers to arrest Michael Akau, 34, and Shawn Ogasawara, 36, on Kilihau St. just before 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Ogasawara’s bail is set at $50,000 while Akau’s bail is set at $15,000. Prosecutors say Ogasawara’s bail is significantly higher because he is a career criminal with 49 previous arrests and several felony convictions, and is currently on probation.

Hawaiian Telcom says the wiring came from an inactive copper line and service was not affected.
