Boaters are being urged to keep their eyes out for an entangled humpback whale.

It was first spotted Tuesday morning off Niihau by a captain of Holo Holo charters boat tour.

The captain noticed the whale was dragging gear and two red buoys.

“He believes the gear was more than likely from Alaska and more than likely from a crab pot fisherman,” Holo Holo Charters Operations Manager Mel Wills

NOAA says it has received reports of boaters attempting to free the whale from the gear.

They say that is extremely dangerous, and against the law because you’re supposed to stay 100 yards away from humpback whales.

If anyone sees the entangled whale, call NOAA‘s marine mammal hotline at (888) 256-9840, or the U.S. Coast Guard on channel 16.
