Kauai officials say a 79-year-old male visitor died Thursday morning while snorkeling in waters fronting Lawai Beach Resort in Poipu.
The Arkansas man was snorkeling at around 11:30 a.m. when a family member noticed he was missing. He was found unresponsive in the water a short time later.
Bystanders pulled him to shore and began performing CPR until firefighters and medics arrived to the scene. He was rushed to Wilcox Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released.
This is Kauai’s first drowning of the year.
Ocean safety officials are reminding the public that a high surf advisory is in effect for all north- and west-facing shores until 6 p.m. Sunday.
