A simple mistake almost sent an elderly woman into bankruptcy.
When Cipriana Luczon’s car insurance policy was up for renewal, she gave her insurance company her checking information. They never transferred the money.
When Luczon got into an accident, she was told her policy was cancelled.
With a fixed income and mounting medical bills, Luczon thought her only option would be to file for bankruptcy. “I cannot pay much for the bills, not everything,” she said. “I’m getting my social security and I don’t know how I can produce that bill if they didn’t cover me.”
Luczon was able to resolve the issue with her insurance company and her bank, but one lawmaker says her case isn’t uncommon.
“All consumers need to be extra careful and check with their financial institutions to make sure their payment was posted,” said Rep. John Mizuno (D-Kalihi Valley, Moanalua, Fort Shafter).
