Ask HPD: Rules on passing school buses

BUS

Honolulu Police Department Capt. Andrew Lum answers this week’s question.

Question: When the school bus stops on the far right lane of a 4 lane divided highway to pick up or to drop off students, are drivers on all four lanes required to stop and not pass the school bus?

Answer: Whenever a school bus is stopped with its visual signals actuated, the driver on the same lane as the school bus or in a lane heading in another direction should stop.

Vehicles do not need to stop is when the roadway is divided into two or more lanes by an intervening space, a physical barrier, or a clearly indicated dividing section.
