The state is paying out thousands of dollars to a prison inmate who was shot in the butt during an arrest.
James Fontanilla filed a claim saying his civil rights were violated during a traffic stop that led to his capture.
Three years ago, Fontanilla was arrested in a stolen car after sheriffs pursued him from the airport to Kunia. Sheriffs say he got out of the car and ran. When they chased after him, he pulled a knife.
Fontanilla said he never attacked and was just trying to walk away when he was shot. The deputy sheriff said his gun went off accidentally when he lost his footing.
The state is paying Fontanilla $35,000 to settle the case.
He’s currently in prison for various charges including stealing a vehicle and drug offenses.
