Honolulu police have charged an 18-year-old high school football star in connection with last week’s fatal beating in Ewa Beach.
Gerime Bradley was charged with manslaughter in the death of 38-year-old John Howard.
Police say at 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Bradley and two other men approached Howard in the middle of Komana St. Police say Bradley beat Howard, then drove off. Howard was taken to the hospital in critical condition where he later died.
Howard’s sister, Maria Gabriel, says her family is in the middle of a nine-day prayer session and that Howard moved to Hawaii in November from Chuuk to be closer to his three kids.
“He’s very loving and kind,” she said. “(He) never made trouble for nobody and I miss him being around the house.” Gabriel says her brother’s service will be held April 8, then his remains will be flown back to Chuuk.
Gabriel says she doesn’t know Bradley and has never seen him before. “For me and my family here, (his arrest) is a big relief for us,” Gabriel said.
The medical examiner says Howard died from complications of a blunt force head injury and classified his death as homicide.
Police arrested Bradley on Saturday. His bail is set at $200,000. No other arrests have been made.
