SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Marc Flores belted a two-run homer, Juliene Jones busted out of a major slump with three hits, two runs, and two RBI and the University of Hawai’i Rainbow Warrior baseball team capped a successful Big West Conference opening weekend with a 12-4 win over No. 10 UC Santa Barbara on Sunday at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

The ‘Bows (14-13, 2-1 BWC) snapped a string of 10 straight series wins by the Gauchos by taking two of the three games this weekend. Jarrett Arakawa (2-0) allowed one earned run on five hits in six strong innings for the win. Scott Kuzminsky worked three relief innings for the save.

Flores finished the afternoon two hits, two runs, and four RBI as Hawai’i exploded for a season-high 16 hits. Trevor Podratz batted 3-4 with two runs and one RBI including a pair of hits in UH’s eight-run fourth inning. Marcus Doi added two hits, one run, and two RBI.

Peter Maris and Robby Nesovic both had two hits and a run scored to lead the Gauchos (19-5, 1-2 BWC). Dominic Mazza (2-2) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs in just three and one-third innings of work.

UH’s eight fourth-inning runs were the most in a game since the ‘Bows plated eight at Grambling in 2012. 11 Hawai’i hitters came to the plate with Flores’s two-run double and Doi’s two-RBI single serving as the big hits of the inning.

The ‘Bows return home and will continue Big West play this week against UC Irvine. Game one of the three-game series is set for Friday, Apr. 4.
