IRVINE, Calif. – With the conference season just underway, University of Hawai’i Rainbow Warrior hurler Matt Cooper garnered his second weekly honor, winning the Big West’s Pitcher of the Week after a stellar complete-game win on Friday at then-No. 10 UC Santa Barbara.
The award makes back-to-back pitcher of the week honors for the ‘Bows after Scott Kuzminsky earned the award last week.
The right-hander allowed six hits and one run while walking two and striking out nine to lead Hawai’i to a 3-1 victory in Friday’s Big West opener. He missed tying his career high for strikeouts by one as he went the distance for the second time this season. Cooper now ranks third in the Big West with a 1.26 ERA.
UCSB entered the series as the Big West team leader in average (.316), home runs (11), runs scored (146), RBI (132) and slugging percentage (.428), but Cooper held the Gauchos to their season-low for runs. His win set the stage for two weekend wins by the ‘Bows that ended the Gauchos’ streak of 10 straight series wins.
The ‘Bows will play their Big West home opener this weekend when they take on UC Irvine in a three-game set beginning this Friday, Mar. 4.
