Drama wasn’t spared for day one of spring practice for the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warrior football team.
After local media interviewed quarterback Ikaika Woolsey, head coach Norm Chow cancelled all interviews for the morning.
The decision stemmed from Honolulu Star-Advertiser columnist Dave Reardon being in attendance, despite Chow saying he wasn’t welcome. Chow was apparently upset about a column Reardon wrote late last year, criticizing the hiring of defensive coordinator Kevin Clune.
“I’m extremely sorry that my actions this morning deflected attention away from a very good beginning to spring practice,” Chow later said in a statement. “Going forward, the focus will continue to be on our football team and the hard work they are putting in to prepare for the 2014 season.”
The team has the day off Wednesday and will return on Thursday.
Spring ball concludes with the annual Spring Fling Warrior Bowl, Saturday, April 26 at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex.
