HONOLULU – Marcus Doi had a pair of hits and Austin Wobrock doubled home a run in the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough as the University of Hawai’i Rainbow Warrior baseball team lost 7-1 to UC Irvine on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

Matt Cooper (3-2) suffered the loss in UH’s Big West Conference home opener. He tossed six and one-third innings, giving up three earned runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. Anteater starter Andrew Morales (6-0) had his way with UH (14-14, 2-2 Big West) hitting, tossing seven and one-third innings of scoreless ball for the win.

Cooper gave up a pair of hits and got out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning, but UCI got on the board in the fourth on a John Brontsema (2-3, 1 RBI) RBI triple. The Anteaters (19-10, 3-1 Big West) began to put the game out of reach one inning later when a pair of errors led to three more runs and extend the lead to 4-0. Kaeo Aliviado (1-4) mishandled a base hit in centerfield allowing two runners to move into scoring position, and Cooper’s errant throw home on a squeeze play led to two runs.

Kris Paulino had a hit, two runs, and two RBI including a two-run homer in the seventh inning that put the game out of reach for UC Irvine. Jerry McClanahan had two hits and two RBI and Taylor Sparks added two hits and two runs.

Austin Wobrock  (2-3, 1 RBI) had a pair of hits including his ninth-inning double that scored Adam Hurley (1 H, 1 R) for UH’s only run.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 6:35 p.m.
