FDA approves opioid overdose medication

(CNN) — A decision from the FDA could save thousands of lives.

Regulators have approved a hand-held injector containing medication that can reverse heroin overdoses.

Called Evzio, the prescription device is like an EpiPen, which is used to treat severe allergy attacks.

It’s injected into muscle, releasing a drug that stops heroin and other opioids from fatally slowing a person’s breathing.

The kit costs about sixty dollars and comes with two pre-filled syringes.

The device is described as “user friendly” and does not require any training.
