HONOLULU – Kaeo Aliviado tripled and scored, Jordan Richartz added a run and an RBI but the University of Hawai’i Rainbow Warrior baseball team lost 3-2 to UC Irvine on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
The ‘Bows fall to 14-15 overall and 2-3 in the Big West Conference while the Anteaters improve to 20-10 and 4-1 in league play.
Scott Kuzminsky allowed one run in four and one-third innings of relief work, but was tagged with the loss to fall to 3-3. He entered the game in the fifth inning with two outs and two runners on but got the final out to keep UCI scoreless and the game tied. Starter Scott Squier allowed two runs on five hits in 4.2 innings.
Elliot Surrey (4-2) pitched seven complete innings to earn the win for UC Irvine (20-10, 4-1 BWC), giving up two runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Sam Moore collected his 12th save in two innings of work.
The Anteaters scored one run in each of the first two innings, but the ‘Bows rallied to tie the game with two runs in the fourth inning. Aliviado led off the inning with a triple then scored off of Richartz’s double on the next at bat. Marcus Doi (1 H, 1 RBI) later tied the game with a bloop single to right field. That would prove to be it for the ‘Bows as Surrey and Moore combined to retire 15 of the final 16 UH hitters.
Kris Paulino had two hits and a run scored for UCI, with Chris Rabago adding a hit and two runs.
Hawai’i and UC Irvine conclude their series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:05 p.m.
