Beachgoers no longer have to wait for the public restrooms at Maunalua Bay in Hawaii Kai to reopen.
The restrooms were shut down in February 2011 so the city could transfer them from a cesspool system to a private wastewater system to meet Environmental Protection Agency standards. They were slated to open by the end of last year.
The city opened them on April 19. The city says its contractor discovered heavily corroded underground piping that needed to be replaced.
So far, the contract has maintained its original cost of $474,000.
