Matson announced Wednesday it will partner with the Polynesian Voyaging Society during Hokulea’s upcoming worldwide voyage.
The shipping company will bring in needed supplies and gear for crew changes at numerous ports. The logistics and shipping support from Matson follows a cash donation of $25,000.
“Matson has shared the ocean with generations of vessels, watercraft and recreational users in our 132 years of service to Hawaii, and it is especially exciting to see a Native Hawaiian navigating group connect with their brothers and sisters around the world through their respective cultural wayfinding techniques,” said Kuuhaku Park, Matson’s vice president, government and community relations.
Hawaii’s traditional double-hulled voyaging canoe will traverse 47,000 nautical miles and visit 26 countries and over 80 ports when it departs next month.
