Google Glass helped take students from three Oahu schools and one school in Mexico on a virtual field trip to Hawaii Island.

Children from Ke Kula Kaiapuni o Nanakuli, Hale Kula Elementary, and University Laboratory School joined Peterson Schools in Mexico City on the field trip led by Keeau Elementary School.

Using web-cams along with Google Glass, students from Keaau Elementary School were able to give the other students a look at what they were seeing as they hiked through Volcanoes National Park today.

They looked at the steam vents and lava rocks.

“I think this is the first of these virtual discussions where classrooms…educators are communicating. Students will be able learn not just with each other, but next to each other,” Sen. Jill Tokuda said.

Not only did students ask each other questions, once the class from Keaau reached the summit of Kilauea Crater they led all students in an ‘oli or chant in honor of Pele.
