City council approves mixed-use development in Aiea

The Honolulu City Council approved Wednesday a new development project in Aiea.

Live, Work, Play Aiea is designed to be a sustainable, smart growth, transit-ready mixed-use master plan that adds new amenities for the Aiea and Pearlridge communities, according to its website.

The 14-acre property, located at Moanalua Rd. and Kaonohi St., was the former home of Kam Drive-In theater and currently hosts the Kamehameha Swap Meet.

Plans include 1,500 new residences with affordable, work force and market housing, a new “Main Street” with restaurants, shops and cafes, and up to 220,000 sq. ft. of retail and office space, including a new neighborhood grocery market.

The first round of retail shops are expected to done by next year.
