Teen arrested for arson in Molokai brush fires

Update April 21, 2014: The investigation revealed that the fires were intentionally set. Molokai patrol officers arrested a 17-year-old male for first-degree and third-degree arson. He was later released to his parents.

Police is investigating whether several brush fires on Molokai were intentionally set Thursday.

Molokai firefighters were dispatched to Kalamaula Mauka just after 10 a.m. Upon arrival, crews discovered three separate fires.

Officials say two were burning at the corner of Likelike Ave. and Pookela St. and merged into one fire approximately a quarter-acre in size. The third fire, also a quarter-acre in size, was located about 50 yards west on Likelike Ave.

Both fires were quickly contained and extinguished. No damages or injuries were reported and no homes were threatened.

The cause has not been determined, but authorities say the fires may have been the work of arson.
