Missing Kauai hiker identified, died from fall

Kauai police has identified a man who was found dead in Kalalau Valley as Daniel Foster of Frisco, Texas.

An autopsy conducted Monday indicates the 31-year-old died of injuries consistent with a fall from a height.

Witnesses say Foster was camping near Kalalau Beach when he set off on a hike with a fellow camper on Tuesday, April 15. The friend stated that he turned around when the terrain became too steep and dangerous, but Foster continued on.

The friend, a male visitor from Kirkland, Wash., reported Foster missing on Thursday morning, April 17, when he didn’t return to the campsite.

Rescue 3 aboard Air 1 conducted an aerial search of the valley that afternoon. They located Foster’s body deep in the valley at around 1:30 p.m. and notified police.

An autopsy confirmed that foul play was not a factor in Foster’s death.
