It was like a tie in baseball, a call of mixed emotions for University of Hawai’i fans.
This afternoon, former Rainbow All-American Kolten Wong was optioned to AAA Memphis by the St. Louis Cardinals. Wong, who began the season as the Cards’ starting second baseman, hit .225 through 71 at-bats in 20 games played this season.
To replace Wong on the big league roster, St. Louis called up Wong’s former Rainbow teammate Greg Garcia. The El Cajon, CA native, a former All-WAC selection at Hawai’i, hit .267 as a middle infielder for the Memphis Redbirds.
Garcia was selected in the 7th round of the 2010 MLB amateur draft by the Cardinals. Wong was a 1st round pick of St. Louis in 2011.
