Board of Water Supply crews are scheduled to begin preliminary work to replace approximately 2,400 feet of eight-inch waterline and appurtenances on Kona Street from Atkinson Drive to Kona Iki Street, beginning on May 5.
During the first phase of the project, construction activities are scheduled to take place Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
After the completion of the first phase, working hours for the remainder of the project will transition to take place in the evenings, Sunday to Thursday from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
The contractor will be making efforts to mitigate noise during night work. Evening work will take place to minimize interference with other ongoing construction projects in the area.
Work for the project is expected to begin on Kona Street near the Atkinson Street intersection and will proceed towards Kona Iki Street.
Motorists are advised to expect delays and to use alternate routes during construction hours, if possible. Drivers traveling through the construction area are asked to please abide by posted traffic signs and allow for additional travel time. Barring any unforeseen circumstances this project is anticipated to be completed in December 2014.
The project was originally scheduled to begin in January 2013, but was delayed due to permitting issues.
The renewal of the water system is necessary to improve fire protection, enhance water service to residents and businesses in the area, and reduce the likelihood of water main breaks.
The waterline to be replaced was installed in 1948.
