Chick rescued from Kalihi storm drain

Honolulu firefighters conducted an unusual rescue Tuesday morning when they received a call for animals in distress in Kalihi.

When they arrived at the location, on Houghtailing St. and Hala Dr., they found a chicken and her two babies had fallen into a storm drain.

“The neighbor said he heard them chirping last night, but we didn’t think anything of it,” said resident Alan Wong. “The mother was going back and forth, pacing around.”

Firefighters were able to get one of the chicks out, but the mother and the other chick moved deeper into the storm drain.

If they re-emerge, HFD says they’ll come back to pull them out.
