An elderly woman is recovering in the hospital after a near-death experience at Hanauma Bay.

At around 2:05 p.m. Wednesday, officials say an 80-year-old woman from Washington state was walking along the shoreline with her son when she collapsed.

Officials say she was not breathing and lost a pulse.

Lifeguards pulled the woman a few yards up the beach, initiated CPR and shocked her with an Automated External Defibrillator. The patient’s pulse returned, she woke up and was able to say a few words, officials said.

Emergency Medical Services continued treatment on scene and took her to the hospital in serious condition.
