More Tron and less Buzz Lightyear is the public’s choice of the new NASA spacesuit design.
With 233,431 votes cast, 63 percent chose the “technology” option for the Z-2 Spacesuit design challenge.
NASA expects the new suits to be ready for testing by November 2014.
One of the primary goals of the Z-2 suit design is for future trips to Mars.
Significant changes in the Z-2 suit are the addition of a hard composite upper torso, updated shoulder and hop joints for mobility, and a new boot design.
The blue sections of the design are electroluminescent wiring for better visibility.
The design will also be the first surface-specific suit to be tested in a full vacuum, and the first suit to use 3D laser scans and 3D-printed hardware for sizing.
