A 58-year-old man from Washington State is dead following a two-car crash in Kilauea Thursday afternoon, Kauai authorities say.

The crash happened shortly after 4 p.m. on Kuhio Hwy. near the Pili Rd. Junction. Police say George Nielson died when the Chevrolet SUV he was in attempted to make a turn from the south-bound lane and was struck by an oncoming Ford truck. A 62-year-old female passenger remains in critical condition.

The driver of the SUV, age 61, and another female passenger, age 56, both suffered non-life threatening injuries. Medics transported them to Wilcox Hospital where they remain in stable condition.

All of the occupants in the Chevy were visitors from Washington state.

The driver of the Ford truck, a 55-year-old Kilauea man, did not sustain injuries.

Officers directed traffic onto Kolo Rd. for roughly five hours following the crash to allow the Traffic Safety Section to conduct an on-scene investigation and clear the scene.

The incident remains under police investigation, but speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the cause of the crash.

This is Kauai’s third traffic-related fatality of 2014.

Representatives from Life’s Bridges, a volunteer-based grief counseling service, and the Kauai Visitors Bureau are assisting the victims and their families.
