The University of Hawaii Board of Regents released Saturday the final report by the Committee on Presidential Selection.
The committee recommended David Lassner, the university’s interim president, and retired Lt. Gen. Frank Wiercinski, former commanding general of U.S. Army Pacific, as its top candidates. The board approved both men as finalists Thursday.
The committee cited Lassner’s working relationship with the state legislature and governor, his commitment to strengthening the school’s pursuits in both education and research, and the willingness to close programs that are no longer justified.
In an interview with the committee, “(Lassner) explained that he tried to lead by example, to be collaborative, to not neglect ‘the small stuff’ that could be fixed immediately, to be relentless at times in pursuing goals, and always to be positive,” the report said.

Meanwhile, the committee lauded Lt. Gen. Wiercinski’s leadership style and experience in conflict resolution.
“LTG Wiercinski believes that he has learned to manage and lead ‘large, complex organizations’ through team building, in which he excels,” the report said. “His tendency is to decentralize and delegate. Senior military officers do not lead by giving orders. They listen, consult and eventually devise ways to bring together individuals and groups with differing backgrounds and interests to achieve an organization’s objectives. This is exactly what he would do in his first days and weeks if appointed as President—listen, consult and learn from staff, faculty, students, and other stakeholders inside and outside the University.”
Campus public forums will begin on Oʻahu, Tuesday, May 6 through Friday, May 9. The Oʻahu forums will be followed by public receptions. The Oʻahu forums and receptions are open to the public and will offer the opportunity to ask questions of the finalists and learn more about their background and experience. Other business forums and meetings will be scheduled throughout the month to meet community leaders and other constituencies.
