A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of one of the victims in February’s deadly plane crash on Lanai.

Kathleen Kern, 50, died on February 26 when the chartered plane she was aboard crashed approximately one mile from Lanai Airport on its way to Kahului. Two other people were also killed, including the pilot. Three more were injured.

Kern and fellow employees with Maui County’s planning department had been on Lanai earlier that evening to staff a Lanai Planning Commission Meeting. The county had chartered a plane to take them back to Maui.

Lawyers for Heather Shannon, Kern’s sister, filed the lawsuit against the owner and operator of the charter plane, Maui Island Air and Maui Aircraft, and a representative for pilot Richard Rooney.

The complaint alleges negligence on their behalf and seeks damages to cover Kern’s estate, funeral and burial expenses.
