On May 8, at 6:39 a.m., Molokai police officers responded to a crash involving a single pickup truck on Mauna Loa Hwy. just east of Kaluakoi Rd. in Mauna Loa, according to Maui Police Dept.
Preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle was traveling east on Mauna Loa Hwy. when it veered left and collided with the guard rail on the north shoulder of the roadway. After striking the guard rail, the vehicle continued in a southeasterly direction to the south shoulder of the roadway, climbed an embankment, which caused the vehicle to flip onto its roof, pinning the two occupants within.
The passenger, an 86-year-old male resident of Kaluakoi, was rushed to Maui Memorial Medical Center where he is currently listed in critical condition.
The driver, an 86-year-old female resident of Kaluakoi, was transported to Molokai General Hospital in stable condition then airlifted to Queen’s Medical Center for further treatment.
It is unknown at this time if speed, drugs, or alcohol were involved. The accident remains under investigation.
