The annual Independence Day at Maunalua Bay Festival has been cancelled for 2014, organizers said Friday.
Maunalua Communities Foundation president Win Schoneman said the organization has not been able to raise the needed funds to support the fireworks event.
Schoneman said MCF tried unsuccessfully to work out sponsor partnerships, but fundraising efforts fell $45,000 short and “we cannot do the last-minute scramble of last year when we had an anonymous donor come forward with half the amount if we raised the other half. We did, but it was stressful.”
Schoneman said the organization plans to hold the event again in 2015, but “we will need more financial support and it has to be very early in the year.”
“We value, very highly, those who have donated and will redouble our efforts to do Independence Day at Maunalua Bay in 2015,” Schoneman added. “Because we are locked into doing fireworks on the water, we are seeking donors who would like to partner with us in this well-attended event.”
MCF is a community education organization dedicated to creating opportunities and facilities to enhance livability and foster community pride and enjoyment.
