The University of Hawaii Athletics department started a crowdfunding campaign on Thursday, asking the public to help defray its high travel costs. The department hopes to reach, and possibly exceed, its $10,000 goal.
The headline “UH: Highest College Athletics Travel Costs in the Nation, Help!” is emblazoned across its Indiegogo page, asking potential donors to “help us build UH Rainbow Warrior pride around the U.S.”
In a short, explanatory video featuring the school’s men’s basketball team, it places the players in a humorous situation, as they paddle their way across the Pacific for a road game in a canoe. Infographics explain that, with more than 470 student-athletes participating in 21 sports, with 19 of them averaging 7 road games per season.
The department reportedly spends approximately a total of $5.6 million per year on travel, about 18 percent of the total athletics’ operating budget.
As of the time of this post, 9 percent, or $935, has been raised, with 58 days left before the campaign’s deadline of July 7, 8:59 p.m. Hawaii time. A total of 16 people have contributed so far.
