Ruptured water pipe temporarily closes Iwilei Kmart

A ruptured sprinkler pipe affected Sunday business at the Kmart store in Iwilei.

Employees and customers began evacuating around 10:30 a.m. when water from the ruptured pipe rained down from the ceiling above the clothing area of the store. Multiple ceiling panels had dislodged due to heavy water damage.

Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) personnel located the pipe’s valve, shut it off, and then used wet vacuums to absorb the spilled water.

No injuries were reported and costs due to damage are unknown.

The store reopened for business around 2 p.m., but HFD notified the store that its sprinkler system is now in need of repair.
