DLNR investigates alleged underwater reef assault caught on video

The Dept. of Land and Natural Resources is investigating an incident between two divers off the Kona coast.

Rene Umberger says she was taking video of an aquarium collector gathering coral reef species when he spotted her. Umberger is a certified dive instructor and activist against taking reef fish for the aquarium trade.

She claims he approached her, hit her on the nose and ripped away her breathing device while they were 50 feet underwater. Umberger’s camera recorded the alleged incident.

DLNR said in a statement, “Our investigation is continuing. When it is completed, the information will be turned over to the County Prosecutor’s office.”
