Driver in deadly Maui crash may have been using mobile device

Maui police say a driver may have been using an electronic mobile device and speeding when he crashed his car in Kihei early Monday morning.

At around 3 a.m., police said Terrance Kyle Morgan, 25, of Kihei, was traveling north-bound on Piilani Hwy. when he lost control, crossed the center line and ran off the shoulder between Welakahao Rd. and Lipoa St., causing his vehicle to roll over.

Morgan was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigation indicated he was not wearing a seatbelt, authorities said.

His 21-year-old male passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center.

Drugs and alcohol have not been determined as the investigation is still pending, according to Maui Police Dept.

This is Maui County’s 12th traffic fatality of the year compared to eight the same time as last year.
