A man accused of setting another man on fire in Kaneohe appeared in court for the first time Monday.
Joel Lonzaga, 44, was charged with second-degree attempted murder after police say Lonzaga poured gasoline on another man and set him on fire at a home on Anoi Rd. last Wednesday, May 7.
Neighbors say the two were arguing at the time and Lonzaga was crazed with anger. “He was just standing there. He was standing there saying, ‘Hey, he deserved it,’ and he started running,” neighbor Edi Schadwill previously told KHON2.
Emergency Medical Services officials said the man suffered second-degree burns and was hospitalized in critical condition. He continues to recover in the hospital.
Lonzaga is also charged with drug offenses. He remains in custody, unable to post $200,000 bail.
