Hawaii Island police are investigating a suspicious fire that broke out Monday morning in Puna.
At 9:15 a.m. Monday, May 12, officers responded to a structure fire at 12-7037 Akanikolea St. in the Kalapana Seaview Estates subdivision.
By the time police officers and firefighters arrived on the scene, the three-story house had already burned to the ground. The Hawaii Fire Dept. said the structure was not permitted.
Neighbor Scott Hansen said the fire was so big, he was afraid his own home would catch fire.
Damage is estimated at $30,000. Officials said one person was living there at the time.
Detectives from the Area I Criminal Investigations Section are investigating the fire and have not ruled out arson.
Police ask anyone with information about this case to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line at 935-3311. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous may call the island-wide Crime Stoppers number at 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
