More than 100 Hawaii-based soldiers are on their way to Afghanistan.
A deployment ceremony was held at Wheeler Army Airfield Tuesday morning.
Soldiers from the 45th Sustainment Brigade headquarters, 8th Theater Sustainment Command are heading to Kandahar in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. They are expected to be there for roughly nine months.
For Sgt. John San Nicolas, this will be his second time to Afghanistan. “This time it’s easier, since we already know what to expect,” he said. “The last time I was gone longer, so we’re already mentally prepared in a way just because I’ve already been there.”
The soldiers will replace the 82nd Sustainment Brigade. Their duties will include enabling base closures and transfers and orchestrating the reduction of military equipment, like vehicles and supplies.
