Ask HPD: Is it legal to have dark, faded license plate covers?

Honolulu Police Department Capt. Andrew Lum answers this week’s question.

Question: Is it legal to have dark or faded license plate covers obscuring a vehicle’s license plate?

There seems to be an increase in the number of dark tinted license plate covers on vehicles, including a few with new safety check stickers.

Some covers are so dark, you cannot make out the characters on the license plate from a few feet away.

Answer: License plate covers are illegal. You should not place anything over a license plate that would make it difficult to read the numbers and letters on the plate.

Also, license plates should be kept reasonably clean for the same reason.

Violators with an obscured license plate could be cited $70.
