Man arrested after driving stolen van into Ala Wai Canal

Honolulu police arrested a Waimanalo man after he drove a stolen van into the Ala Wai Canal early Wednesday morning.

The incident was first reported at about 3:30 a.m. at Ala Wai Blvd. near the bridge by Kalakaua Ave.

Andrew Eichelberger, 29, lost control and drove the van into the canal, authorities said. He was able to escape on his own and walk to the ambulance.

“I heard there was a loud crash and somebody crashed a car into the canal,” said witness Joe Costello.

“Witnesses said they had seen it happen, and before the police even got here, there was a guy sitting on the sidewalk facing the water,” he added.

Paramedics took him to the hospital in serious condition, according to Emergency Medical Services. He was the only person inside.

Police and fire crews searched the canal and found the van totally submerged. It was pulled out of the water at around 10 a.m.

Eichelberger was arrested for driving a stolen vehicle, driving while intoxicated and driving without a license. He was charged Thursday with drunk driving and driving without a license and remains in custody. His total bail amounts to $600 so far.

Eichelberger has three prior vehicle theft convictions, as well as convictions for theft, robbery and drug charges. He was released from jail just two days ago on Monday, May 12, a Dept. of Public Safety spokesperson said.
