Hawaiian Electric Company has restored power in the Manoa and Tantalus areas.

A spokesperson said the outage occurred just before 11 a.m. and was caused by a construction crew accidentally hitting an underground utility line on Piikoi St.

Roughly 10,000 homes and businesses were affected, he said. Power was fully restored at 11:30 a.m.

The outage also affected the entire University of Hawaii at Manoa campus, where many students were in the middle of final examinations.

Graduate student Don Tran was proctoring a chemistry exam when the outage occurred.

“The power suddenly shut down and the alarm went off, and then we all had to evacuate,” he said. “(Students) were angry… because they were disturbed and they had to move into the quad area to do their exams.”

Tran said many students were distracted “because of the loud noise combined with the glare of the sunlight, and they cannot read properly compared when they sit inside the room.”
