The race for governor is heating up.
Former Lt. Gov. James “Duke” Aiona Jr. officially announced Monday he is running for governor as a Republican.
Aiona said his goal as governor is to regain the trust of the people of Hawaii and bring back respect and balance.
“All we have to do is look at some of the broken promises, the false hope and really, the failure for the elected officials to consider, to recognize our people’s ideas, our principals and our concerns,” Aiona said.
Gov. Neil Abercrombie and state Sen. David Ige will go head-to-head in the Democratic race.
Former Honolulu mayor Mufi Hannemann is expected to run for governor as a candidate for the Hawaii Independent Party.
Hawaii’s primary election will be held on August 9.
