Aloha Tower Marketplace may look different these days.

The main entrance is boarded up and only two restaurants remain open.

Hawaii Pacific University now owns Aloha Tower.

It has plans to redevelop the area with new restaurants, shops including Barnes and Noble, and residential units for HPU students.

The university gave the community an update Monday on the project.

“At the moment the status is we’re doing the demolition on 2nd floor that is almost complete. We’re waiting for the final permits so we can begin doing the same thing on the ground floor and hopefully begin building in the next couple of weeks,” HPU president Dr. Geoffrey Bannister said.

HPU is spending about $40 million for the renovations and improvements.

The redevelopment project is expected to be finished and re-open by September 2015.
