KHON2 has learned a Delta flight from Honolulu to Nagoya, Japan was diverted to Wake Island Wednesday.

Flight 611 departed as scheduled from Honolulu International Airport and encountered a mechanical issue with one of the aircraft’s two engines during the flight, the airlines said in a statement.

The crew followed procedures and diverted the Boeing 767 to Wake Island, a small coral atoll just north of the Marshall Islands.

The flight landed safely and without incident, the airline said.

Another aircraft was sent to pick up the passengers and they arrived in Nagoya at 2:41 a.m. local time just a few hours behind schedule, a spokesperson said.
