The City’s Department of Environmental Services responded today to a sanitary sewer spill in Wahiawa at around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.
The spill was reported by the Wahiawa Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The incident occurred during a thunderstorm, when a power flicker caused a system failure in the facility’s ultraviolet disinfection system.
An estimated 1,458 gallons of partially treated wastewater was discharged from the plant into Lake Wilson.
Water sampling is being conducted and warning signs will be posted in the area first thing Monday morning.
The public is advised to stay out of the affected waterways until warning signs have been taken down.
