Georgia Girl Scout raises $13,000 to honor women in service

JOHNS CREEK, GA (WSB/CNN) – This Memorial Day had special meaning for a Georgia Girl Scout.

13-year-old Sabrina Yvellez helped raise funds to honor women in service at the new Veterans Memorial Walk at Newtown Park.

Many of her family members were in the military, and she wanted to find a way not only to honor them, but to also honor the women that served.

“I wanted to do it for women because I feel they exemplified the Girl Scout motto of courage, confidence and character,” Sabrina said.

Yvellez raised 13-thousand dollars by selling baked goods and coloring books.

The Johns Creek Veterans Association (JCVA) still needs to raise about $100,000 more to complete the project.

“Our biggest problem is I don’t have nine more Sabrinas,” JCVA’s President Wayne Kidd told WSB.

The Veterans Memorial Walk is expected to be completed on Veterans Day, November 11, 2014.
