SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Kona native Kolten Yamaguchi and his Pepperdine squad get ready to take part in the NCAA National Championship Tournament tomorrow. The regional round takes place in California with Big West conference champion Cal-Poly hosting Arizona State, Sacramento State, and the Waves, which also feature Mid-Pacific alum, Sophomore Pitcher Ivan Dilda.
So far this season, the Konawaena grad, Yamaguchi, has two homeruns, four hits, three RBI’s and two stolen bases.
Yamaguchi, a 2013 All-WCC first teamer, and his Waves (39-16) open up the first game of the four-team double-elimination regional against Arizona State (33-22) at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning. Arizona State finished third in the Pac-12 Conference while Pepperdine claimed both the West Coast Conference regular-season and tournament titles.
Cal Poly (45-10), selected as one of 16 regional hosts Sunday after clinching its first Big West Conference championship a week earlier, plays Sacramento State (39-22), champion of both the regular-season and tournament in the Western Athletic Conference, on Friday at 6 p.m. in Baggett Stadium.
Yamaguchi and Dilda are just two of 12 Hawaii High School graduates taking part in the CWS Regional round.
