The Honolulu Fire Department reports that a man died of an apparent drowning off of Laie Point.

On Sunday, he was identified as 26-year-old Traison Ako of Waianae. An autopsy will be performed on Monday.

The rescue call came in from one of the victim’s family members around 1:40 p.m. Saturday. It is unknown how the trouble started, but it appears that the victim was trying to help another family member who was having problems in the water.

Rescue personnel got to the scene by hiking down a cliffside and placed the unresponsive victim onto a jet ski.

Once on shore, emergency medical personnel pronounced the man dead on arrival.
