Big Island firefighters monitoring contained brushfire

A brushfire that started Sunday afternoon near Kaalualu Bay on the Big Island is being contained by Hawaii County Fire Department ground personnel.

At last report, South Point Road is closed to traffic.

The original call came in at 2:31 p.m. Sunday and by 6:45 p.m., the fire had spread over 1,022 acres.

The fire was fueled by tradewinds and moving fast in a northwesterly direction.

Four-wheel drive vehicles and two helicopters utilizing water drops helped fight the brushfire.

Personnel remained on the scene overnight to monitor the fire, which was reportedly contained by 10 p.m

Two bulldozers are being utilized for any possible fire breaks around the perimeter.

No injuries or evacuations were reported.
